I recently went on an overseas trip. And once again, prior to leaving, worry of the unknown crept up on me.
What if we miss our connection? What if we get on the wrong train? What if I can’t find a restroom? (You have to pay to use them in many places throughout Europe, by the way.)
Besides the fact that every one of my worries was unfounded and it was an absolutely wonderful, seamless trip, my heart was convicted again at how easy it was for me to forget God’s excellent track record of faithfulness and start to worry that He might miss something.
Why is it so easy for us to worry when God has clearly shown us in His Word and through our circumstances Who He is—He is capable, He is loving, He is all-knowing, He is all-powerful, and He never misses a thing. It’s when we are not communing and connecting with Him that we begin to think we are on our own.
Why the Anxiety?
Anxiety is quite the buzz word today. Nearly everyone has it at one time or another. Just about everyone excuses it like it’s a normal part of life. But anxiety doesn’t need to hold any presence in your life if you belong to Jesus. His Word actually promises that.
That’s right. God’s Word, unlike anything else, can guarantee us an anxiety-free life when we acknowledge and depend upon His presence.
In Philippians 4:6 we are instructed to “be anxious for nothing” (NKJV). In the New Living Translation, that verse and the following one tells us: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in [the awareness of] Christ Jesus.”
I love that. According to that passage of Scripture, all I have to do is take my concerns to Him, thank Him for the peace He offers, and then experience it. When you and I do that, we’re reminded He’s there and He’s got us. And that’s when the peace (which exceeds anything we can understand) replaces worry and anxiety.
My friends, being anxious about anything is not something inherent in your personality or body chemistry. It is not something you are destined to experience. Instead of telling yourself or others “I struggle with anxiety,” boldly declare where your trust is: “I know God’s got this.”
Many times throughout Scripture, God commands us to “fear not” and assures His people that His presence goes before them. Our loving God knows our human tendency to worry, and to work ourselves up about something we can’t control. But as the Only One who is all-powerful and absolutely IN control, He is assuring us that we don’t have to fear or worry or become anxious because He is with us. And He’s got us.
Jesus Understands
In John 14:1, Jesus compassionately told His followers: “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me” because He was going to prepare a place for us so we would always be with Him. He is not the God who leaves us stranded. He will never say, “You’re on your own now. You’ve got this, yourself.”
Jesus personally addressed our tendency to worry and become anxious about our circumstances, our provision, and our future. In Matthew 6:25-34, He told us: “Do not be worried about your life…, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. … For the [unbelievers] eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.”
Then He gives us the solution to our worry problem: We are to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you” (Matthew 6:25-27, 32-33 NASB).
So, my friend, can your God do anything? Is He really as capable as He says He is when He tell us in His Word that nothing is impossible for Him? Truly, He can take care of your future. He can take care of your next meal, your next rent or mortgage payment, your next relationship or no relationship. Jesus is enough and when we really believe that, and we understand how precious we are to Him, there’s absolutely no reason to be anxious.
Our Challenge
What if you and I were to focus today on all God has given us as a way of reminding ourselves of His excellent track record, instead of looking at what we don’t have, or what might possibly happen, and fretting about it?
Let’s worship Him the minute worry enters our minds as a way of reminding ourselves where our hope is, where our comfort is found, and where our security lies.
In the words of Randy Alcorn, author of the incredibly encouraging book, Heaven, “no wonder the devil is so intent on keeping us from grasping our standing in Christ—if we see ourselves in heaven with Christ, we will be drawn to worship and serve him here and now” and there won’t be any room for thinking of ourselves or our inabilities. Our minds would be fully focused on who God is and what He’s capable of.
He’s the One I want to focus on, don’t you? He is enough. For our tomorrows, for our lack, for our weaknesses, for our disappointments. The older I become, the more precious to me the anticipation of seeing Christ face-to-face, and the more those fears, worries, and anxieties about health, material wants, convenience, and death fade in comparison to the unsurpassable glory and anticipation of one day seeing Him.
How will you focus on Him today, instead of all you are tempted to worry about? I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below so I can be praying for you.
(And for more on this capable God who is with you, for you, and has a reason for the circumstances you’re in, see my book The New Loneliness.)

Cindi, I find my greatest comfort and reassurance with my church friends, at mass on Sunday, camped out at various church activities, and camped in front of the Eternal Word Television Network. After my husband died I felt that the easiest way to go on was to be helpful to others. Last Sunday as I was leaving church I heard a greeting and I quickly grinned and realized that I did indeed know this guy. I grinned and commented Dave is that really you? He smiled and commented-Sure is Lynn. I urged him to call me soon-because he was mourning his wife’s recent death and I had to skip her funeral since it was 100 degrees. Sure will Lynn-and when I told him that I had found a card for his wife-he shook his head and commented not to bother. But I insist Dave-I finally saw a card that I like and you will be getting it. Fellow church group members have been life savers-one group member was terrified when she did not have my neighbor’s phone number to be sure that I was safe. So yesterday I ordered four copies of the house key-one for each of my Medic Alert supporters. To make the keys easy to recognize the guy who made them for me put Our Lady of Guadalupe on each of them.
Linda, I’m glad you find comfort being around God’s people. There is unity among believers when we all are surrendered to and following Christ. I praise Him for the joy you are experiencing by having a church family. God created us for community WITH one another, not to isolate from others. 🙂
I liked your article. A friend emailed me your link yesterday evening. So just read it now.
Comforting and I always use the verse be anxious about nothing take it to the Lord in prayer.
Many times have done so . But I am now in a dire situation and keep praying but don’t know what to do . The best thing to do first or to trust . To find the professional to help .
It’s a financial problem. A house tax has gone up and I am on limited funds . That won’t get better. Not income .
I feel it’s my fault not being proactive before. Even though I have believed in God and pray for others in faith for them.
And wonder if Jesus meant he would be with his disciples and if we trust heaven after we die is the destination we don’t have to worry. Worry for huge things is at the moment my worry . About money to live on and home and the more necessary needs of internet, car, a true friend as live alone… close friend to trust. As my life long prayers for to be married and have children never was granted now 70yrs old. It’s one thing that can bring tears to my eyes when I think I don’t have children or a husband …
But being anxious about little things is really disobedient to not trusting and loving our Savour .
But thank you for your thoughts on Gods’ word .
I am sure they helped my friend in her long health situation she has Cancers .
Which I have prayed over the years and with a trusting beliving heart .
And when I read your article about anxiety about traveling was exactly what I had already written to her.
But my problem is one brought about by change of tax .. and I feel quilty that I have been really terrible in not being active and having been procrastinating in many things I should have been proactive.. thus feel why would God help me?
Much appreciate your prayers thank you .
Judith, thank you for taking the time to let me know how to pray for you. And please don’t think that because you weren’t as diligent with something as you believe you should have been that God will now ignore your prayers or punish you for it. Be encouraged by God’s Word that tells us if we lack wisdom (in ANY area–even in a tax situation), “you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5 NIV). That verse assures us that not only will God give or answer our prayers GENEROUSLY, but He will do it “without finding fault.” Our God is not one to respond by thinking, Well, you should have prepared for this situation. God knows our frailties, our weaknesses, our oversights, and even our outright rebellion at times and yet He still is so very loving toward us, as a loving Father who wants the best for His children. So pour out your heart to Him, and gain confidence from this passage in 1 John 5:14-15, which assures us: “This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.” He is your Advocate. And He wants you to ask and depend on Him to come through for you. 🙂 I’ve never seen Him NOT help those whom He loves…and He demonstrated that love for you on the cross.
Hello Cindi,
I have been receiving your emails for several years. I truly enjoy every one of them!
I want to acknowledge the hard times you’ve come through. Your story on missing your Mom was so touching and honest. When I read your stories, I can feel you are just a truly kind, caring person.
I’m from Canada, I have not purchased your book yet, but I can’t wait to sit down and take the time to read it! I have no doubt it will be great!! (The New Lonliness)
Thank you for all the time and dedication it takes for all you do to help women continue to grow closer to God.
He is so amazing, yet we forget to stop, and take it to Him right away! We like to carry it and roll around in it, and THEN remember, oh right, I don’t have to carry this. Our Almighty Father will.
Sending blessings and well wishes gor a great Fall Season!!
Thank you so much, Elizabeth. Your kind words brought me such joy this morning. I appreciate you following my ministry and mentioning how my writings about missing my mom have impacted you. (I didn’t remember writing about her on my blog, but I’m so glad you remembered it.) I was just reviewing my journals this morning about God’s faithfulness to me and my siblings during the time we were losing our mom. So, your comment came at a good time. Blessings and a wonderful Fall season to you as well. <3
Hi Cindi,
Thank you for your faithfulness, to connect with so many people to bring words of encouragement and draw us closer to the Lord. You are such a blessing.😊🙏
The Lord is near no matter where we are. All we need to do is cry out to Him.
I had so much company this summer. I couldn’t finish what the Lord began so many years ago. But soon —I will be sending my writings to you for your excellent coaching. I am trusting the Lord for this whole project, but especially the last lap.🙏
May blessings abound to you and your family,
Joni
