Should you worry about your spiritual growth?

Do you ever worry that you aren’t growing enough, spiritually? And should it be something you worry about?

One of my readers recently said:

“I often worry about my spiritual growth. Sometimes I feel like I am not growing.”

I, too, used to worry about my spiritual growth:

  • Am I where I should be, spiritually, considering how long I’ve known God?
  • Is there something more I should be doing — or something more I should be studying — so I can grow in an area where I still need to become more like Christ?
  • Am I being obedient enough?

And yet, I realize now that I’ve been asking the wrong questions.

Although Paul tells us in Philippians 2:12-13 to “work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it  God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure,”  it can feel overwhelming if we start thinking of all there is to do to be a good follower of Christ. And we can constantly feel we are coming up short, especially if we are comparing ourselves to someone else. (And who can really know, anyway, how spiritually mature another person is since we don’t see the inside track of their intimate life with Christ).

But when a teacher of the Jewish Law came to Jesus at night (perhaps so no one else would know what he was worried about), and asked what God’s greatest commandment was (to make sure he was doing all he should), Jesus’ answer was not about what the man should be doing, but about the condition of his heart. Jesus said the greatest commandment (and therefore, God’s No. 1 concern) is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37).

I realized then that the true question is not “Am I growing, spiritually?” or “Am I doing enough?” but “Am I loving Him more?”

As we spend time in prayer and in God’s Word, we will get to know Him. The more we get to know Him, the more we will love Him. And the more we love Him, the more we will trust Him and grow in our obedience of Him.

So, instead of worrying about your growth in Him, daily whisper this prayer: “God, give me a heart for you.” And then focus on loving Him. Set your mind on being with Him throughout the day. Talk to Him as if He’s right there (because He is). And as you love Him more, the growth — and everything else — will fall into place (Matthew 6:33).

Next week I will address one of the most common questions I am asked: “Why isn’t God answering my prayers for a husband?” In the meantime, let me know in the comment section below what area of worry that you would like me to address in an upcoming blog.

Hi Cindy! Thank you for your insight. I never looked at it like that before, but I will next time I wonder about my growth. I will set my love on Jesus and just love Him. I believe there is a way to tell if you’re growing. You’ll just know. You’ll feel it. You’ll feel differently. And you’ll bear fruit. I’m still growing, and I told my husband recently I never want to get to a place where I feel I have “arrived” . No I want to learn something new everyday until I’m 120, and I want to stay humble always. Thank you Cindy for your wisdom. Sorry I didn’t spell your name right Mrs. Cindi, it started erasing what I wrote when I tried to fix it. Have a beautiful day!

Your comments always make my day, Brittany! 🙂 And like you, I have not “arrived” spiritually, nor will I ever, this side of heaven. And if I ever believe I have, then pride will have surely reared its ugly head in my life, right? Let’s focus on loving Jesus throughout this week. You have a beautiful day, too.

What I learned after experiencing betrayal. Have What I learned after experiencing betrayal.

Have you been shocked, disappointed, or angry at the number of stories you’ve read recently about leaders in the faith who have failed morally and spiritually?

The most recent was Author Phillip Yancey whose books my husband and I were well-acquainted with. It’s easy to become critical or to say “how could they?” or to think: I would never do something like that. Yet when a trusted believer we know personally shocks us by their behavior, it hits home at a far more personal level and can be more hurtful and convicting on so many levels.

I was recently shell-shocked to discover that a close friend and professional consultant of mine in ministry was arrested for (and confessed to) a federal crime and heinous sins I can’t even wrap my head around. I never would have suspected this person of anything resembling the charges that were filed. The gut-wrenching nausea, the reeling thoughts of How could I have been blinded to this for a decade? assaulted me. Then the accusations from the enemy set in: How could you have worked with this person for so long? How did you not see this coming? You can never trust anyone again. No one is who they seem to be.

Yet, as I gave my hurt and disillusionment to Jesus, remembering what a God-send this person was to my ministry a decade ago, and how blessed I was by my working relationship with this person, my shock and anger dissolved into compassion to see the offender’s plight as God did. A loved child of God’s had fallen morally, spiritually, gravely. And this person’s family was reeling far more than I was. This person’s church was hurting on a level I was unaware of. And the enemy was surely gloating.

Rather than focus on feeling betrayed, and allowing the enemy to instill in me a cynicism toward other trusted believers, I realized God wanted to pull me closer to Himself through this.

If you haven’t been hurt already by a trusted believer, it very likely may happen--whether it's your pastor, worship leader, of friend. Here's an article I wrote to process my pain:
