Let’s admit it. We know we’re not supposed to worry and yet we do.
We worry about finances, our health, and the health of those we love. We worry about what’s already happened and about what hasn’t yet taken place.
There’s a myriad of reasons why we shouldn’t worry. Worry causes stress which prematurely ages us, gives us wrinkles, and wreaks havoc on our health. Worry negatively affects our relationships with others who don’t want to be around a worry wart.
But what if I told you the real reasons you and I worry have more to do with our relationship with God than the people and situations we’re worried about? The reasons you worry probably aren’t the reasons you’re thinking, but as soon as you know them, you may be able to convince yourself to stop.
Here are five primary reasons you and I worry and how to stop it right now.
- We worry because we forget God is all-powerful.
We worry because we forget about God’s power. We forget what He’s capable of and we start to believe we must take care of things ourselves. We start panicking that we’re on our own, and we might not be able to handle it. You know what? We can’t handle it. It’s why we need Him. God wants us to realize and admit our weakness so He can be strong on our behalf.
God often wants to do through us, what is beyond us. So when you’re faced with a situation in which you feel weak or powerless, rather than worry, call upon the Only One who take care of the situation.
God’s power to take care of whatever concerns you is there for the asking. We must first humble ourselves, admit we are powerless, and ask for His power. James 4:10 says: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”
Whatever your circumstance, if you’re feeling weak and full of worry right now, His power is available to you for the asking.
2. We worry because we’ve forgotten His presence.
One of the first things that causes us to worry is the fear that we are alone…or we will have to deal with someone on our own. Or perhaps we worry for someone else because we fear they are alone. But when we do that, we’ve clearly forgotten God’s presence – that He’s right here with us, going before us, walking alongside us, and watching our backs.
In Psalm 139:7 David asks “Where can I go from your spirit? Where can I flee your presence?” And then he answers his question in the next five verses by explaining the staying power of God’s presence. Read it. Highlight it. Believe it. And ask for God’s power to live it.
Basically, the God of the Universe won’t let you out of His protective sight. That’s one incredible thought. That’s one comforting thought. And that should keep you from worrying. When you’re tempted to fret that you are alone in your worrisome situation, remember His presence. And start talking to Him as if He’s right here. Because He is.
3. We worry because we don’t truly believe God is capable.
At the root of all of our “What if” questions and worries is what we really believe about God. When our minds play through the various what ifs…the question we are really asking is “What if God isn’t capable?” and “What if God can’t handle this?”
There is a reason God’s Word tells us clearly not to worry. Philippians 4:6-7 in the New Living Translation says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
As you give God all of your what ifs, worries, and anxieties, He can calm your heart, give you His peace, and remind you that He is in absolute control.
4. We worry because we try to control our lives and the lives of others.
It is in our human nature to try to control our lives and the lives of everyone else around us. We believe, at times, that it’s up to us to right all wrongs and fix all things broken. But only God can restore the broken, heal the hurting, and bring ultimate justice.
After a season of life in which he was convinced he had no control over what God had clearly allowed, Job said: “I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted” (42:1). And in case God’s people became prideful and started to think their victories were at their own hands, the Psalmist corrected them when he sang: “It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them” (Psalm 44:3).
Worry dissolves as you surrender to God and admit you are not in control of anything– He is.
5. We worry because we don’t really believe God is good.
God is good … all the time. As the perfect parent (which none of us are), He wants only the best for His children (Matthew 7:11). God is good because He causes all things (even the things you’re tempted to worry about) to work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). He causes all situations to work for good by using them to make you more like Jesus (Romans 8:29). So trust His goodness, not just temporarily but eternally. He wants for you what will shape you for eternity. That means you don’t need to worry about what happens around you. Nothing can come close to you that hasn’t first passed through His loving hands (Romans 8:38-39).
Can you surrender your worries to the Only One who can work all things out according to His good and perfect plan?

So good!! Thank you!
You’re welcome, Shonda. Thanks for reading and commenting. 🙂
You’re welcome!
As always your newsletter comes on the exact day I need to hear it. Worry has been a major part of my life here lately – I so needed to remember that I don’t need to do this. God is waiting on me to give it to Him. Thank you for all that you do.
As always, I appreciate hearing from you, Lara, and knowing you are pressing on in the faith, despite the difficulties. Thanks for your encouragement and may you be encouraged this week, as well. It’s bound to be a better year (after this past one), isn’t it? 🙂
Absolutely true! A very powerful reminder that God is in control.
Thank you Cindi for sharing.
You’re welcome, Liz. Thank you for taking the time to read and leave a comment. I appreciate it. 🙂
Thank you for this reminder. I needed this today!
You’re welcome, Kari. I love it when God has certain blogs for certain people at just the right time. His timing and His ways are always perfect (Isaiah 55:8-11).
This was such a good reminder! This year, after being a Christian for many many years, I came to realize that I don’t *really * believe that God is good and I don’t trust Him, evidenced by my perpetual worry and fear. As the Lord is renewing my mind by bringing me scripture after scripture about His goodness, faithfulness, and steadfast love, my mind is being renewed by His spirit, through His word. I praise the Lord for that!! Thank you, Cindi, for a timely post. Blessings!
You’re welcome, Karen. I’m glad my blog came at a good time for you…as affirmation that you are continuing to do the right thing as you renew your mind in the Scriptures and remind yourself of His attributes. Press on, my friend. 🙂
Such a powerful and timely post Cindi! I have a dear friend who is beginning chemo today and I have been worried since she revealed her cancer diagnosis to me. Yet, I know God is in control and have told her so.
Thanks, Donna, for reading and leaving a comment. Cancer does bring concerns and can be cause for worry because of how it tends to take our loved ones. I’m glad you were able to encourage her that God is in control and her diagnosis did not take Him by surprise. How wonderful that she has a friend like you to encourage her and pray for her. God understands your worries and concerns for her. 🙂
Cindy, I read all your articles and am blessed everytime. I have a backseat worry that I wonder if God wants to answer my prayer. I know He can, but I don’t know if He will.
Hi Lisa, thanks for your honesty. Prayer can be intimidating sometimes if we feel God doesn’t WANT to answer our prayers. And yet, when we trust His goodness and his timing we can be assured that even His “no” or “wait” responses are often for our protection or because He is preparing something even better that we haven’t thought to ask for. I wrote a two-part blog a couple years back on some reasons why God doesn’t appear to be blessing our lives or answering our prayers. I think you might find those blogs helpful. You can access them here:https://strengthforthesoul.com/five-more-reasons-god-isnt-saying-yes/
I am thankful He forgives me when I worry. I am thankful to be able to go to God in prayer and seek His comfort.
Thanks, Melissa, for those thoughts and observations of what we can ALL be thankful for. Blessing on your day as you trust Him.
Hi Cindi, just read your article and it touched me deeply. I am struggling with a daughter in law who will not meet with me. I feel like there is a problem some where and I want to talk with her and get it out in the open. I texted her over an hour ago and she has not texted me back. I feel dis-respected. I have just prayed and hope God will fix this.
Thanks.
Hi Linda, I’m sorry for that situation with your daughter-in-law that has you anxious and worried. I’ve learned from experience with my own mom (and sister-in-law and sister and friends) that many times I can’t text back immediately because I’m busy, with another person, on the phone, or simply not watching my phone constantly, and vice versa. It has saved me much anxiety to consider that others may be in that same situation. Just because we have access to instantly message someone else, does not mean we should expect to get an instant reply. Give her time. Love her. Pray for her. And trust God with the timing. I’m so glad that Scripture tells us to “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). As you do, I’m certain He will give you peace about your situation. 🙂
I’m going through this right now and have been for weeks. Worry, anxiety and fear are not friends of mine. I cried out to God to show me why it was happening and His answer shocked me. This week with the knowledge He gave me, still was no different except that I cry out to Him more for help to face each situation as it comes. And I know God is faithful.
Yes, God is faithful. Thanks for reading and staying in touch, Ramona.
Such a wonderful and timely message to me today. Thanks so much for allowing God to use you as a vessel. Be blessed exceedingly in Jesus’ precious Name.
Thanks for reading, Edith. Blessings.
Loved this. The connection between my desire to control things leading to worry…the Lord is showing me about all the ways control is effecting me. Thank you for writing this!
Thank you so much for this reminder! Came at just the right time. So very needed. Thank you for all of your uplifting content, your blog is such an encouragement!
