If you’re feeling frightened or uneasy about the future, I understand. In an election year, when you may feel your vote doesn’t count or your values aren’t shared by the majority of Americans, it’s easy to get swept up in the panic.
I used to get all worked up about politics, even enraged at times. And then I remembered a perspective-changing truth: My hope is in the One who dwells in heaven, and in my heart, not in the White House. My dependence is on the God of this universe, not on whomever happens to be in leadership for a short season. While I can speak up about injustice and vote according to my values and conscience, ultimately I’m depending on God who hears and enacts justice, not the people in leadership. The day you and I begin looking to our government or elected officials for our quality of life, our comfort, and our security, is the day we’ve forgotten our sovereign God.
I know too many believers who were devastated after the 2020 election. But my friends, our savior is not whoever sits on Capitol Hill. Our Savior is the One who gave His life for us on Calvary’s Hill. Your allegiance is not to whomever wins or doesn’t win the vote. Your allegiance is to the One who has already won the victory for all eternity.
Jesus is the king and that will never change. He sits on the throne of heaven and will never be removed or replaced.
God is sovereign over elections. He is sovereign over individual choices, and He is sovereign over this nation as well as any other. When you keep that in mind, you will not be shaken, regardless of what happens on Election Day.
You and I are not at the whim of the electoral vote. Your hope is not in which way the vote will swing. Your hope is in “God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another” (Psalm 75:7 ESV). That’s right. God is ultimately the One who grants authority to human leaders and prevents others from positions of power, regardless of how we voted and whom we think is righteous or unrighteous. God has plans and purposes that are so much bigger than what we see playing out in this country. I believe we might be a lot more concerned about American politics than God is. The Living God is focused on saving individual souls, transforming individual hearts, and receiving glory from your life and mine, day in and day out. When we lose sight of that, we’ve succumbed to the distraction of this world’s political system, rather than heeding Scripture’s command to set our minds on eternal things.
Colossians 3:2-3 says: “Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on the earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (ESV).
Hidden with Christ in God! That means as you hide yourself in Him, place your hope in Him, invest your time and treasures in Him, you will not be disappointed. When your trust is steadily in Him there’s no way you can be shaken. And when your life is lived solely for Him, that’s what changes others’ lives, not this nation’s laws or amendments.
In Psalm 62:6 David declared, “He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” That can be your motto too.
I encourage you to pray today for a deeper dependence on God than your nation, state government, or local leaders.
In Psalm 121:1-2, David sang, “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” David reminded us that the Lord is the One who “will not let your foot be moved” (verse 3), is your keeper and your shade or relief (verse 5), and is the One who keeps you from all evil (verse 7) and guards your going out and your coming in (verse 8). Look to the Lord, who owns the hills, not to Capitol Hill, and your security will not be shaken.

Is there anyway I can listen to this?? I had a stroke and I’m not able to read very well. Thank you, Kendra
Kendra, I believe there is an app where you can “hear” what you see on the screen if you pull up my blog on your phone. Have someone google “listening apps” and see if they can help.
With so much angst about the upcoming election….all of the hateful rhetoric, I needed to hear this message from Cindi. In the daily media fray, the enemy causes us to lose perspective. Thank you for reminding me to look to the Lord.
You’re welcome, Linda. It was a reminder to myself as well. 🙂 Let’s keep our minds set on eternal things.
Thank you Cindi I needed to hear this also.
