Do you know what it’s like to feel disappointed in God?
You’ve prayed. You’ve been faithful and obedient. You’ve sincerely wanted God’s best, not yours. And then “God’s best” turned out to be something that didn’t feel best for you after all.
You’re not alone in that disappointment. And God hasn’t forgotten about you.
For the past three years, my family has experienced its share of disappointments. My husband, a pastor who served faithfully for 20 years, stepped out of the senior pastorate for what we believed would be a one-year sabbatical, after which time he would transition into whatever God had for him next. And that one year turned into two, and then into three, and then, just as we were bracing ourselves for another disappointing year, a door cracked open. And that door actually stayed open long enough for him to walk through and experience life on the “other side of disappointment” once again.
And the words that keep coming to my mind and heart — as I reflect on the past three years of asking, waiting, complaining, repenting, and asking again — are never forgotten.
While you may feel disappointed this Christmas because of a lost love, a lost job, a lost opportunity, a hurtful betrayal, or a wayward child, you are not forgotten. Disappointed at life, perhaps, but never forgotten.
Here is a prayer I prayed in the disappointment. And I can pray it again now as I reflect on His perfect timing. I trust it will bring peace to your heart as you continue to ask and wait for your God to come through.
Lord, Jesus, I thank You for what You are doing in and around my life. Not because I feel good about it, but because Your Word commands me to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). I truly want Your will in my life, but I want Your grace and Your wisdom to not only recognize it, but to accept it and be grateful for it, as well.
I know You are in control of all things. I know You are the giver of “every good and perfect gift” (James 1:17). And yet for some reason You have chosen not to give me what I am asking for at this time. Your Word says You are “a sun [to light my way] and shield [to protect me from harm]” and that “no good thing” will You withhold from those whose walk is blameless (Psalm 84:11). Therefore, I choose to believe You are still good even when You withhold something from me and I don’t understand why. I choose to believe You are still loving, and You are still protecting me in the midst of what still feels disappointing.
Lord, at this time of the year when people are focused on giving, help me to remember that You have given me the greatest gift I could ever receive – salvation through my faith in Your Son, Jesus. And because of that great gift of Your Son, I also have peace, comfort, provision, and many blessings I might have missed because I was focused on the disappointments and the letdowns instead.
Thank You for all the days You have heard my cries, seen my tears, and worked behind the scenes in my life when I didn’t even realize it. Thank You for the many times you have walked before me or alongside me, “though your footprints were not seen” (Psalm 77:19).
Thank You for the air I breathe, for the ways I am healthy, for the fact that as disappointing as life has been, it could be far worse. Thank You for the people in my life who have reached out to me and been the arms of Jesus to embrace me, the hands of Jesus to serve me, and the mouth of Jesus to provide words of comfort. Thank You, that even on days when I received none of that, You were still there, speaking to me through your Word, through the circumstances in my life, and through Your quiet whispers on my heart.
As Christmas approaches, help me to love and serve others around me from a heart that loves You and trusts You no matter what has happened, and no matter what lies ahead. Thank You that my hope is not in my circumstances, nor in the odds, nor in “luck,” nor in others; my hope is in You (Psalm 62:5). “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2). “For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth” (Psalm 71:5).
And Lord, in the midst of my disappointment, don’t let my heart grow bitter and don’t let me begin to doubt Your love and presence. In these difficult times, “May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord, is in you” (Psalm 25:21). May I be a light to others this Christmas season as I focus on Who You are, and may my heart of gratitude and faith in Your unseen promises please Your heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Let me know if you’ve prayed this prayer so I can pray for you, too. Merry Christmas, my friend, you are not forgotten.
I like your blog. I have been going through a lot so I’m going to try what you wrote. Merry Christmas.
Thank you, Sherry. Merry Christmas to you, too.
Yes needed to hear this. Done that and still do that with my current situations. Then I feel guilty. I know I shouldn’t be doing those things. So then I have to repent. But then something else just happens and I hope through it all again. I feel as in I am on a merry go round that doesn’t have a stopping point.
I did pray the prayer and thanks for sharing. I always feel like I am the only one that does these things.
You are not alone, Mary Ann. So many struggle with the same emotions. Even the songwriters in the Psalms. Read Psalm 42 and notice the merry go round feelings…yet even they maintained their hope in God alone. Be encouraged, He’s near when you need Him.
Oh my! THANK YOU for your words this morning. They are exactly what I needed! This time of year is a struggle and your words and prayer brought me back to where I need to be….so thankful. Merry Christmas to you–
Denise, Thank you for your encouraging response this morning. Merry Christmas to you, too. ?
I prayed this prayer over my life today. Seeking full time employment since May and relationship issues have been disappointing. Better days are coming but the wait is very hard being a single mom and the only source of financial support. Please pray with me for all of those in this same situation.
Praying for you this morning, Cheryl. Thank you for taking the time to let me know. His best is always worth the wait.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful prayer, it really resonated deep within in my heart & I plan on sharing your message with a couple of friends and a family member who’ve been going through difficult times. ♥
Thank you for sharing it, Terri. And it’s great to hear from you again this time of year. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
This prayer blessed me so very much, Cindi! Thank you for opening your experience to us. At times (a lot!) I do indeed feel forgotten, and then God uses someone to remind me of His attention to me. Today, He used you! Please continue in your ministry to uplift and encourage others. 🙂
God bless YOU, Gloria, for your sweet words of encouragement today. What goes around, comes around when it comes to blessing and encouragement in the name of Jesus. 🙂
Your prayer was an inspiration and confirmation of God’s work in my life. I have been praying for a prayer that I call “my Wow” because it would take only the hand of God to accomplish it. I pray for His timing and His will to be done in Jesus Name. Please join me in continuing to pray for “my Wow”
I am so encouraged, Dee, that this prayer spoke to you, too. Affirmation that I am hearing from Him. 🙂 I love how He intertwines the writing of my heart and hands into the timing of your life and exactly where you are and what you need form Him. Only His Spirit could do that. I am praying this morning for that work that only He can accomplish. Any of us can pray for the possible….and sometimes we don’t even need prayer for what is truly possible for us to attain on our own. But God loves the prayers for the impossible…the prayers that show the world Who He is and all that He can accomplish. Lord Jesus, grant her “wow” for Your glory and Your renown. For You are the God of the Impossible. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Merry Christmas, Dee. Maintain your hope in Him alone.
Hi… We own a franchise-a well known cleaning company, for 19 years now. This year has been the worst with the constant challenges with emoloyees. We are soooooo incredibly tired and stressed (hate that witd!). We have 25 or so women who work for us. Just ine small ex-I can’t even get thru typing this little note—girl didn’t double check her binder this am and can’t get into a home to clean—WEEKLY CUSTOMER. We are short-staffed, quit, one gone for three weeks during busiest season-mother ill; others with attendance issues as well, turning diwn work every day because of these problems, cannot find help for office, mu husband’s temper, and I have to do estimates in evening after being here from 7:30-4:30. I am 58; husband is 61. I need God’s grace; I love Him so but I ho between anger and tears.
Oh Molly, bless your heart. You are truly running on empty. I am praying for you this morning. And, if you have a U.S. mailing address, please email that to me (along with your last name — or an official name for the envelope) so I can send you a copy of my book, When You’re Running on Empty. I would love to do that as a Christmas gift to pour rest and peace into your tired, weary soul. Blessings, my friend. (Email me at Cindi@StrengthForTheSoul.com)
Hi Cindi I have read the prayer and it has just spoken to me regarding my situation about my daughter that I shared with you and still prayers not answered cos we are approaching Christmas and there’s no communication between us since Oct. I desperately wish she could come home but after your prayer today I will just wait on the Lord to take charge and please pray for my former boss’s wife, Daphne. She lost her hubby a couple of years ago and 2 days ago she informed me she laid to rest her 19 year old daughter on 1 Dec, my heart is more sore for her than my situation. Plz pray help for Daphne, I really wish to help her realise that she is not alone but should just put her trust in God but you know how difficult it is.
Vanessa, thank you for responding and yes, I will pray for you and that you will be able to minister to and encourage Daphne’s heart as well. Sometimes when we are hurting, we begin to heal as we reach out to someone who has even deeper hurts than we do.

Wading through a huge betrayal after 28 years of marriage, that has shaken me to the core. Thank you for these words, for this prayer, that reminds me I matter and am not forgotten.
Oh, Mary Jane, you DO matter to Him. Your heart is precious to Him. Your betrayal is known to Him. And His heart breaks with yours, I’m certain of that. Lean into Him as He is your Rock, your Peace and your Source of comfort. Though you feel shaken to the core, you are not, my friend. Because He is your Rock of strength, and your stronghold. I wrote in my devotional, God’s Whispers to a Woman’s Heart, that Scripture does not define God as our Driftwood or our Stream that is constantly running or a Temperamental Power in which we never know what to expect. But He is our Rock, our Refuge, our Strong Tower. Immovable. Unchanging. Steady. Always in the same place. He is your Rock, not your Roller Coaster — your immovable Rock of Refuge to whom you can always go. Experience Him mightily at this time. I know He’s holding you tight as you cling to Him.
This prayer is so fitting at this time of my life. I know I am not forgotten, but I’m not sure believe it. The disappointment I have felt the last 18 months since my daughter became estranged from the family has been immeasurable. The true blessing I need right now to go on is reunification of my family. I cannot tell you how disappointed I have felt the last 16 months in what feels like unanswered prayer. I do not want to believe God wants this for me, but reality is here we are 18 months later and it surely IS what He wants because it is still happening. Deliver me Lord………..please!!!!
Carol, I’m sorry for your struggle and for your long wait. Sometimes, when I’m frustrated at having to wait so long for something I have to remind myself that God is eternal…time is nothing to Him, although it’s everything to us. Yet, His timing is also perfect. He sees the beginning and the end, and He knows what’s in between as well. Trust His goodness and His love. And I don’t believe God WANTS your family to be broken, but He wants your trust, as well as your daughter’s. And He often will take His time and allow whatever He will for hearts to change and surrender to Him. You are in my prayers this evening. Keep trusting God’s wisdom and His timing.
Sooooooo needed. I stepped out in faith this past June from being the interim director of worship, a dream job that I knew God told me not to get settled in. I was hoping once I stepped out in faith He would reward me with my dream job at the church that would be home for me. He’s spoken the promise this past August but nothing has come to fruition yet and I am back working in corporate America. Holding on, trusting, and keeping an attitude of gratitude through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Candace, I’m so glad to hear that you are holding on, trusting, and keeping an attitude of gratitude in spite of not having what you had hoped for by now. It is our faith, and our unswerving trust in the Lord that pleases Him the most. And I know He rewards that in His children. I’m certain it’s just a matter of time and then you will understand that God has the perfect timing behind every good and perfect gift. Trust His timing and His plan.
thank you for this prayer! Yes, I too feel disappointed, but I know that the Lord is good. I know that I am not forgotten. Thank you for reminding me I am not alone. I have struggled for a few years now with a marriage that is not where it should be. I keep on praying though.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. Marriage can be frustrating, at times, but God can do a wondrous work in us as we trust Him with where we want our marriage to be. He cares about what is close to your heart, so keep trusting Him.
This message couldn’t have arrived at a better time than this.
I was going through some rough times and I had even started doubting God can help me.
After the prayer I felt new hope in the Lord.
Thank you very much, God bless you always and make this Christmas a memorable one for you.
Merry Christmas
Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m glad this message came at the perfect time for you. Merry Christmas to you, too. 🙂
I have prayed this prayer. LORD GUIDE ME. THANK YOU YOUR HUMBLED GRACIOUS SERVANT.
Well, I always say God’s timing is perfect. He knows our needs before we know our needs. And I am blessed Sister Cindi God put you in my path at this given moment at this season. Every word spoken and prayers are exactly what my soul yearns for. I am interested in looking into your books. May God bless you abundantly as you bless others through The Holy Spirit in Christ Jesus.
Thank you, Gloria, for your kind and encouraging words. I do hope you find further encouragement in my books. Have a blessed New Year.
